Referrals to Bloomfield Hospital are accepted by both national and regional services.

- Have significant therapeutic needs
- Would benefit from patient-centred interventions
- Behave in a highly challenging way
- Display aggression or agitation
- Present with psychiatric symptoms of depression or anxiety

The funding for referrals is currently mainly provided through Regional Community Health Organisations (CHOs) and specifically the Head of Mental Health Service in the CHO.

The CHO areas are reforming to Regional Health Authorities (RHA) in 2024. Bloomfield Hospital accepts funded referrals from acute hospitals, general and mental health services, the Central Mental Hospital, and prison services.

The referrer must complete the relevant referral form, including a short risk assessment, and return it to us. Relevant psychiatric, neurological and forensic reports should be included, as well as assessments, imaging results, and other relevant information such as funding sources.

Following receipt of the relevant documentation and confirmation of funding, our clinical team will complete an initial assessment. The purpose of this is to identify areas to be further explored on admission to the unit. Pertinent reports and other relevant information will be relayed back to the referrer.
